Description
Backbone Rock tunnel near Shady Valley, Tennessee. Known as the shortest tunnel in the world, it was blasted through to make way for the Beaver Dam Railroad in 1901. The railway continued operations until 1918, when the lumber and manganese ore played out. In 1924, the tracks were removed and in the early 1930s the tunnel was widened and Highway 133 was created through Backbone Rock. When first built, the engineers neglected to remove enough rock for the steam locomotive smokestack, so that part of the tunnel's peak had to be chiseled out by hand!
