Norfolk and Western No. 2156, built in 1942 at its Roanoke, VA shops is only slightly smaller than the Union Pacific Big Boy. This massive 2-8-8-2 freight hauler was in the second in a series of 16 class Y6a "Mallet" locomotives. It was capable of 5600 drawbar horsepower at 25 mph and a top speed of 50 mph. Upon its retirement in 1959, it had logged over 1 million operating miles. NW 2156 has since been returned to the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri.
