Description
Smithfield Plantatioin was completed in 1774 by Colonel William Preston and his wife, Susanna. William Preston was a surveyor for Botetourt and Finacastle Counties. Covering 1680 acres and including most of present-day Blacksburg and Virginia Tech, the Smithfield Plantation property with its house today occupies about 12 acres of land. Over time, it was home to three governors of Virginia. It was kept in the family until 1959 when it was donated to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA). It was then meticulously restored to period and opened to the public.
