Description
The Southern 4501, a Mikado type 2-8-2 locomotive running at full steam as she blows here whistle loud and clear near Rossville, Georgia. Built in 1911 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, it is the sole survior of hundreds of similar locomotives use by the Southern Railway. She was retired by Southern RR in 1948 and sold to the Kentucky and Tennessee Railway and used to haul coal from a company mine. The Tennessee Valley Railway Museum's (TRVM) co-founder and president purchased her and with help from TVRM members restored her to "as delivered" condition in the Southern RR scheme. She now routinely pulls rail excursions from the Grand Depot station in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Summerville, Georgia and back.
