Description
Many of the original mile markers for the former Abingdon branch of the Norfolk and Western railroad still exist on the Virginia Creeper Trail. Mile Marker No. 6 is east of the Watauga Access and indicates six miles from Depot Square in downtown Abingdon, Virginia. The Virginia-Carolina railroad went into action on 7 February 1900, when its first train steamed along from Abingdon to Damascus, Virginia. The last train on the Abingdon branch ran at the end of March, 1977 and by the end of 1978 all the rails had been removed. The right of way was than acquired and the entire route from Abingdon to Whitetop, Virginia became the "rails to trails" now known as the Virginia Creeper Trail.
